George Vavaroutsos

George Vavaroutsos directs projects related to the development, renovation and retrofitting of sustainable properties, energy efficiency, finance and local economic development at Malachite LLC. He holds the LEED Accredited Professional designation of the U.S. Green Building Council.

Mr. Vavaroutsos' recent work at Malachite LLC has included LEED certification support for a $50 million multi-family rental project and extensive research on the green retrofit of office projects throughout the world. Along with Managing Principal Leanne Tobias Mr. Vavaroutsos has written Malachite's new book, Retrofitting Office Buildings to be Green and Energy-Efficient, a step-by-step guide to green and energy-efficient building retrofits. He has also completed assignments on the critical design, construction and planning aspects of the renovation and retrofit of sustainable and energy efficient buildings; public finance support for green real estate development and renovation; and global climate change policy.

As a development manager and consultant, Mr. Vavaroutsos has worked on real estate assignments for a variety of clients both domestically and internationally, including the U.S. State Department and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He began his career with RCLCo (Robert Charles Lesser and Company), where he conducted market and feasibility studies for commercial, residential, senior living, retail and mixed-use properties throughout the Washington, D.C. metro area and in other locations.

Mr. Vavaroutsos is an expert on the development, retrofit and market positioning of green and energy efficient real estate. He has created financial pro formas and specifications and managed contract negotiations and construction.

Mr. Vavaroutsos is an honors economics graduate of the University of Michigan, where he received his degree with distinction. He holds a professional development certificate from New York University in real estate finance and investment. He has also studied at the London School of Economics.
