Leanne Tobias
Leanne Tobias is founder and Principal of Malachite LLC. Leanne brings over 19 years of national commercial real estate experience to this practice area, as well as extensive national contacts in commercial real estate development, finance, government, and related disciplines. Leanne is also a nationally recognized speaker and author on sustainable real estate who has been quoted extensively in the media. She is one of the few commercial real estate investment and management professionals accredited by the U.S. Green Building Council under its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program.
Commercial Real Estate And Fund Management
$1 billion in commercial real estate investment
As Managing Director of the Multi-Employer Property Trust, a $3.2 billion commercial real estate fund, Leanne:
- Led teams that developed and managed successful green real estate projects
- Managed the fund’s Investment Committee for new acquisitions
- Negotiated or participated in more than $1 billion in real estate acquisitions and sales
- Directed the leasing and management of over 6 million square feet of commercial real estate throughout the United States.
For the AFL-CIO Building Investment Trust, a commercial real estate loan fund, Leanne:
- Directed all real estate operations
- Chaired the Investment Committee
- Established sound internal management policies, including investment due diligence and real estate valuation protocols
- Helped to double assets under management in a year’s time
Industry Representation

For the Mortgage Bankers Association, the U.S.’s leading real estate finance organization, Leanne:
- Developed national policy and programs on behalf of banks, life insurance companies, pension funds, and capital markets lenders.of commercial mortgage-backed securities (CMBS).
- Worked with the U.S. Treasury Department, the Federal Reserve Board, the Real Estate Roundtable, Moody’s, Standard and Poor’s, and other organizations to improve the regulatory environment for commercial real estate.
Public Sector
As a consultant to the U.S. government and the City of New York, Leanne:
- Developed policies to encourage development in underserved urban areas and to encourage small business growth
- Recommended improvements in federal policy on mortgage revenue bonds
- Assessed the effectiveness of education and training programs for state and local finance officials
